About Pinetown JKA
Building character through karate since the 1980s
Our History
Duncan Player originally established Pinetown JKA Karate in the mid-1980s. When Duncan started Players Gyms, the karate was taken over by national team member Ronnie Webber. Karin Prinsloo and Caron Harris were both training with Ronnie at the time and took over the dojo in February 1997.
From the early 2000s, Karin Prinsloo and her team of instructors established Pinetown JKA Karate Institute as a highly respected karate school and a place of learning, growth and meaningful friendships.
Dylan Powell became head instructor at Pinetown JKA in 2018 and continues to mentor and grow the club within this amazing family community. Today, the club is home to some of KZN’s best karateka at both All Styles (WKF) and South Africa JKA level.
The club is situated at the Cowies Hill Municipality Hall at 5 Woodside Road, Cowies Hill, and has approximately 130 students training across a healthy mix of male, female, adult and junior members.

What Our Members Say
Pinetown JKA has been more than just a dojo — it has truly become a family. Over the years, the Thompson family, as karateka (Frank, Desere, Michael and Savannah), have experienced unforgettable moments of growth, discipline and friendship. Every training session, grading and tournament has shaped us into the karateka we are today. Pinetown JKA has taught us not only the art of karate but also the values of respect, perseverance and unity — lessons we carry with us both on and off the dojo floor.
