Learn More →— Gichin Funakoshi“The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants.”
Karate is a martial art and system of self-defence that originated hundreds of years ago in Okinawa, shaped by an ancient tradition from China. Literally meaning ‘the way of the empty hand’, karate relies on the hands, feet and body alone. Yet karate reaches far beyond the physical. Founded on a deep philosophical and spiritual tradition rooted in Bushido and Zen Buddhist principles, it develops the body, mind and character through disciplined training and practice.
The true purpose of karate is the development of balance, harmony and inner strength through strict, disciplined training. Karate cultivates natural, effortless action and an openness, peace and wholeness of character that enriches every aspect of daily life.
With members in over 100 countries, the Japan Karate Association is the world’s largest and most prestigious karate organisation, and the only karate body officially recognised by the Japanese government. The JKA is The Keeper of Karate’s Highest Tradition, preserving the soul and spirit of the art in line with Bushido. Pinetown JKA is proudly affiliated with this world-class organisation.
From complete beginners to advanced black belts, our classes cater to every level. Whether you are 5 or 55, there is a place for you on the dojo floor.
Our instructors hold internationally recognised JKA qualifications and are led by Sensei Dylan Powell, SA JKA and Africa Cup champion.
Karate delivers a full-body workout that builds strength, flexibility, coordination and cardiovascular fitness for all ages.
We teach authentic JKA Shotokan karate, preserving the art’s rich traditions of discipline, respect and continuous self-improvement.
Pinetown JKA has been more than just a dojo — it has truly become a family. Over the years, the Thompson family, as karateka (Frank, Desere, Michael and Savannah), have experienced unforgettable moments of growth, discipline and friendship. Every training session, grading and tournament has shaped us into the karateka we are today. Pinetown JKA has taught us not only the art of karate but also the values of respect, perseverance and unity — lessons we carry with us both on and off the dojo floor.
